higher level chess is altogether different from mathamatics and science,
upto some level it is useful to kids as it increases concentration(as earlier said by conquerer. ),reflexes(blitz chess) , ability to think cunningly . still it won't help much , it is just a matter of personel interest.(i know some top chess players who suck at maths lol).
