What might happen if there were no checks and balances built in to the Constitution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know why the checks and balances was originally created?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When the founding fathers were debating a way to escape British rule and prevent their country founded on freedom from reverting to a monarchy (which was what they wanted to escape in the first place), they created a system of checks and balances to prevent the government from becoming too powerful. Each branch cannot function without the other, and there are several restrictions keeping the different branches in check. Without that system, we might have quickly turned into a dictatorship, or some other type of oppressive monarchy.
