Write “yes” or “no” on the equations below if the chemical equation is balanced or not. 1. 2H2 + O2 ---> 2H2O 2. S8 + 12O2 ---> 8SO3 3. HgO ---> Hg + O2 4. Zn + HCl ---> ZnCl2 + H2 5. 2Na + 2H2O ---> 2NaOH + H2 6. 2Al + 3FeO ---> Al2O3 + 3Fe 7. 4Si2H3 + 11O2 ---> 8SiO2 + 6H2O 8. Fe + O2 ---> Fe2O3 9. 2C7H6O2 + 15O2 ---> 14CO2 + 6H2O 10. 4FeS2 + 11O2 ---> 2Fe2O3 + 8SO2 11. Fe2O3 + H2 ---> Fe + H2O 12. 2K + 2Br2 ---> 2KBr 13. 2C2H2 + 5O2 ---> 4CO2 + 2H2O 14. 2H2O2 ---> 2H2O

If the number of atoms of each individual element is equal on both sides of the arrow then the equation is balanced. For example: Zn + S --> 2ZnS This is not balanced. First look at the number of Zn atoms on the left. There is only one. Now look at the right. There are two. To make them equal just put a two as the coefficient of the Zn on the left. Now the equation should look like: 2Zn + S --> 2ZnS This is still not balanced since not all of the atoms are equal. Look at the number of S on both sides of the equation. There is one atom on the left side while there are two atoms on the right side. To make these equal put a 2 as the coefficient in front of S. Now the equation should look like: 2Zn + 2S --> 2ZnS Now this equation is balanced.
