When Augustus founded the Roman Empire, the Mediterranean Sea began to be called Mare Nostrum by the Romans. Their empire was centered on this sea and all the area was full of trade and naval development

Well the Roman Empire helped Roman conquerors build a strong navy and use the Sea to connect with the conquered provinces forever. Helped expand Roman Empire to huge areas

If you see the map on this article, the red countries that border the Mediterranean Sea are all controlled by the Roman Empire. Which proves my point, I do believe :)
