When Augustus founded the Roman Empire, the Mediterranean Sea began to be called Mare Nostrum by the Romans. Their empire was centered on this sea and all the area was full of trade and naval development

oh lol well then the roman empire makes loads more sense :P Well the Roman Empire helped Roman conquerors build a strong navy and use the Sea to connect with the conquered provinces forever. Helped expand Roman Empire to huge areas
