I would say the chat box is to be used for just simply talk taking a break from homework (like you said) Although sometimes it get inappropriate i would say use chat boxes as a break from homework and don't $\small\color{red}{ABUSE}$ it

Its not like you can be all about work the entire time have fun make friends study together :) this way if you ever need help you will have those friends to help you out also this is a good way to attract attention to a post you would want people to see or simply need help on :)

Not really. Maybe a couple users. I made my friends by the users I worked alongside with in helping others :)

Not really...I helped others when I started getting tagged on multiple subjects. I never did use the chat until 80ss.

The chats are there to get to know the users and also like @pooja195  said to take  a breather from home work. Also, the chats are there to find help to a question, a thing to catch someones attention if needed.

The chats are there for literally ANYTHING!
As long as you don't break the CoC.
So, the academic related chatting is totally fine :)
