OpenStudy is a profit-organization that started off with a small group of programmer, some still in college. OpenStudy had funding through such thing as NGLC and affiliated groups. 

They received funding to kickstart the site. Eventually, this funding ran out which is why OpenStudy had to start placing ads, using subscriptions, and various other methods to fund the site. Believe it or not, Money does not grow on trees. In order to keep OpenStudy free or everyone, it's going to cost money, and how we make that money ourselves is up to us.
