Republicans were too hard on the south after the war and prolonged the recovery of the south. The south resisted the tight controls the federal government tried to impose and in the end the feds gave up and the power structure of the old south was restored. Well, Native Americans always had the unfair side of the stick...they had to walk the trail of tears because of America's greedy desire to own land and shove the Natives unto barren reservations
