What are the removable discontinuities of (2x^3-3x+1)/(x^3-5x+7)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

hi there, Welcome to OpenStudy :) First off, do you know what a "removable discontinuity" is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but I have a hard time calculating it... @Luigi0210

OpenStudy (freckles):

are those really cubic expressions on top and bottom?

OpenStudy (freckles):

I don't know what methods you are allowed to use... But the goal is to see if the top and bottom have any common factors. if they do then it is possible if you have a removable discontinuity. if they don't then they don't have a removable discontinuity.

OpenStudy (freckles):

you know actually it shouldn't be too bad the top polynomial has a rational zero so you can find a factor then you can see if the top's zeros are zeros of the bottom and if not then there are not removable discontinuities

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So i find zeroes for the numerator and denominator and if they share a common zero, it has a removable discontinuity? @freckles

OpenStudy (freckles):

it would be easier to find the zeros of the top and then see if any of those zeros work for the bottom by pluggin them in and seeing if it is also zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks ! @freckles
