How will adding the value 100 affect the mean and median of the data set 1, 5, 7, 7, 9, 10? A. The mean and the median increase by the same amount. B. The median increases and the mean stays the same. C. The mean increases and the median stays the same. D. The mean increases less than the median increases.

OpenStudy (rizags):

try adding the 100 to the set!

OpenStudy (rizags):

for the median, we get 1,5,7,7,9,10,100, which has a middle term of 7 (same median as the original set)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

feel like it is A or C?

OpenStudy (rizags):

and the mean obviously has to increase because we are adding a very large number to the set. you can try it yourself, but mathematical proof is unnessecary

OpenStudy (rizags):

its C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. Will fan and medal.

OpenStudy (rizags):

well, its not unnesecary, its just that the answer is pretty obvious given that the number 100 is so much larger than the other 6 numbers in the set

OpenStudy (rizags):

thank you
