What is the main purpose of the Embargo Act?

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

The purpose of the embargo was to send a message to the powers in Europe, seeing to it that until the Orders in Council and Continental System were rescinded they would no longer have a loyal customer in America. This law stopped all trade between America and any other country. The goal was to get Britain and France, who were fighting each other at the time, to stop restricting American trade. But the Act backfired, the American people suffered, and the daring attempt to use economic pressure in a world at war was not successful. The Act was ended in 1809.
