The sum of three integers is 42. Let x be the middle of the three integers. I'm confused... what does it mean by the middle? Does that mean the 2nd consecutive integer?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I think you meant to say "The sum of three CONSECUTIVE integers is 42" right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I think you are right. It's talking about the second integer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(jim_thompson5910) omg yes, i'm sorry!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

examples of consecutive integers are 1,2,3 6,7,8 78,79,80 basically whole numbers that follow immediately after one another

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if x is the middle, then x+1 is the 3rd number x-1 is the first number in general we'll have: x-1, x, x+1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how I came up with that?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh nvm, I didn't see where you wrote "Does that mean the 2nd consecutive integer?" yes you are correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay, good haha! Thank you!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
