Major variables affecting how blood flows through the cardiovascular system: • Blood pressure: Pressure is a measurement of force per unit area. Blood pressure is caused by blood pressing on the walls of blood vessels as it moves through the cardiovascular system. Ordinary blood pressure keeps blood flowing normally through the body. Higher than normal blood pressure is dangerous because it puts additional strain on the cardiovascular system, which can result in a heart attack or stroke. Low blood pressure is also dangerous, because sufficient blood flow may not reach all parts of the body.

• Blood volume: A higher blood volume means that there is more blood in the cardiovascular system; a lower blood volume means less blood in the cardiovascular system. Higher blood volume means higher blood pressure. • Resistance: Resistance is a force that opposes the flow of blood. Partial blockages of blood vessels increase the resistance to blood flow. • Viscosity: Viscosity is the “thickness” of a fluid. For example, honey and syrup both have a higher viscosity than water. Fluids with a lower viscosity flow more easily. Higher viscosity blood means higher blood pressure.
