Jeremy is buying four books from an online bookstore. The Prices of the book are $5.98, $12.50, $35.99 and $7.99. Jeremy lives in a state where the bookstore much charge 5 percent sales tax. In addition, Jeremy will have to pay shipping and handling charges. The Bookstores handling charges are as follows: $3.20 for the first item, $2.00 each for the second through fourth items; and $1.00 each for any additional items. Note that the handling charge is not taxed. What is Jeremy’s total? Will fan and medal

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

First, to find the sales tax we need to add up all the books.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. We have to take it step by step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so add the books first

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. That eghhuals 62.46

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, next you would add the shipping fees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i added and got $62.46 cents

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6.20

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Now, since the price with sales tax is going to be 105% of the original price, what is 105% as a decimal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

65.583

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

do not forget that shipping and handling are NOT taxed

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yep, that can just be rounded to 65.58 since we can't of a third of a cent :) So we know that 65.58 + shipping/handling is the final price. You were on the right track with 6.20, but you only added 3 of the prices, not all 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get it would i add 3.20 two times and the 2.00 4 times

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

$3.20 for the first item, $2 each for the second through fourth items; and $1.00 each for any additional items.

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

We have 4 items. So, 3.2 for the first, 2 for the second, 2 for the third, 2 for the fourth. We don't have any additional items.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.20

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes..that is s & h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would add 63.46+9.20

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yep, so just add the 2 prices

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Not quite, we need to add the price with the tax

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant 62.46 not 63

OpenStudy (anonymous):

71.66

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

That is the price before tax, we need to add the price with tax.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that it 71.66

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

No, look at what I just put

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says the handling charge is not taxed what would i do im confused what would i add before getting the correct answer

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

We only put the tax on the price of the books.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 9.20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the total tax amount right

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

No, 9.20 is the shipping charge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would i divide by 5 to 62.46

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

We didn't add the tax (105%) to that because the problem says that shipping is not taxed

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Why would you divide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it says a number is 5 percent is in it

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

All that we need to do is add the price of the books with tax, 65.58, to the shipping charge.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i dont know what the shopping charge is total

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

We know what the shipping charge is

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

We already found the shipping charge.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so isnt it 65.58+9.20

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

74.78

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the total then

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i do anything else

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Nope, that is the final answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you very much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i appreciate it

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

No problem :)
