Those whom were middle class or better would shop in their ever growing cities, which obviously has not changed very much to this day. Another thing is that although they could do even before their independence is reading, whether it be a news paper or a book, to the day you see that reading is fortunately not something that goes out of style. And although it's not the most popular hobby you can still find plenty of crafty people who knit, sew, embroider and other ways of making apparel and other useful things.
