I would characterize  tom in a self centered person that only thinks about him self. in the excerpt it says that tom counted the pages of when church would end implying that he hates the way the church schedule is listed he isn't paying any attention, just wanting to leave the . tom just nods his head pretending that he is paying attention, just to get attention, like how he just sits there with the eyes fluttering. falling asleep and waking up before anyone sees tom just out like a light .
