Lets call the two players in the first round, player A and player B. First you have 12 choices to pick for player A. Then given that you picked a player for player A, there are eleven choices left to choose for player B. Therefore there are 12 x 11 ways in all .

I would say it is 12*11/2 as half of the matches have the same players but with the order reversed..
