The graph below shows the value of Edna's profits f(t), in dollars, after t months:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the closest approximate average rate of change for Edna's profits from the 18th month to the 21st month?

@SyedMohammed98

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Three dollars per month Nine dollars per month 13.75 dollars per month 41.25 dollars per month

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can I get some help here pretty please?=)

@e.mccormick @mathstudent55

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My guess is A?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The average rate of change over a section of a graph is found by getting the slope of the line that connects the two points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so can you help me do that please @e.mccormick =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what i'm having trouble with =)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

At month 18, what is the proffits? At month 21, what is the proffits? That will give you two (x,y) points. Then you can use the slope formula \(\dfrac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}\).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay but as you can see by looking at the graph, you really can't see month 18, or 21 =)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

18 is easy. It is right at 0. If you look at it carefully, 21 crosses somewhere between 41 and 49. The "easy" number there is 45. While not exact, that will make the rest simpler. (18,0) and (21,45)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you, this has helped me so much =)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So what did you get for a slope on that?
