Why do animals that live at high altitudes have more blood than those that live at low altitudes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They have more blood because animals that live at higher altitudes need much more body temperature. Their bodies produce a higher amount of blood cells to help contribute to more warmth since they living in cold temperatures :)

@zuilishous101 Also It's an adaptation to compensate for a lack of oxygen at high altitudes. More blood cells help to carry more oxygen through their bodies to make up for the thin air at high altitudes :)
