Hmm. What level of school are you in? Lignin, the chemical that gives trees and other plants their strength, cannot be broken down at a significant rate by anything besides some Basidiomycetes. However, oxygen is not released, it is actually used up by the heterotrophs causing the decay, and CO2 is released.
