Near the end of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge responds to the visits of the three ghosts with a commitment: “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach. Oh, tell me that I may sponge away the writing on this stone!” Write a four-paragraph essay in your Reading Notebook examining the Spirits and their effect on Scrooge. You may use your Three Spirits table that you completed in Lesson 7. In the first paragraph, describe the Ghost of Christmas Past. Explain what it shows Scrooge, what it teaches Scrooge, and what Scrooge learns from it. In the second paragraph, describe the Ghost of Christmas Present. Explain what it shows Scrooge, what it teaches Scrooge, and what Scrooge learns from it. In the third paragraph, describe the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Explain what it shows Scrooge, what it teaches Scrooge, and what Scrooge learns from it. In the final paragraph, conclude the discussion by explaining how the inner conflict of Scrooge is resolved. What lessons does Scrooge learn, and how are they relevant for a present-day reader.
