I've never read it, but when you are asked to identify the \(\large\bf\color{darkgray}{theme}\) in a story, you should try to understand the author's purpose and what the main idea for the story is. It is what an author is trying to portray through his/her example [or story]. :3

I read this story and I cannot give you a direct answer (this site doesn't allow us plus how would you learn lol) but what I can tell you is that the theme is related to friendship, family, and importance of accepting yourself and others. The theme stays the same throughout the story THOUGH it soon becomes a the importance of dealing with death and much more.

Hope this wasn't too direct and you should try to read the book its a very good sad back. I cried and when I watched the movie I also cried lol :)
