help! Solve for x: -2|x - 3| = -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -3, x = 4.5 x = 3, x = 9 x = -3, x = 9 No solutions

OpenStudy (keyonsay):

x=9,-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain it please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the two lines are called absolute lines and they make every thing inside them positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the news equation would be-2x+6=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand how I got that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, please go on :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay now subtract 6 from both sides so it would be -2x=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then divide -2 from bothes sides so now your left with x=-6!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its not what keyonsay said?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its no solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it multiple choice or do you have to solve it (the question)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -3, x = 4.5 x = 3, x = 9 x = -3, x = 9 No solutions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiple choice, those are the choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmm okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh oh ohhh i got it sorry you would plug in the numbers into the absolute value equation and see if it equaled to 12 not solve it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what is the correct answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm working on it just a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be the third one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thank you man! appreciate it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No prob! :)
