Need help with homework guys will medal

OpenStudy (philcua):

What is the solution to the equation http://static.k12.com/bank_packages/files/media/mathml_5d691dfadf7468d726f272cfdbd9060f09c2247b_1.gif ? x =

OpenStudy (philcua):

@freckles

OpenStudy (freckles):

can you divide 9 and 6 by 3?

OpenStudy (philcua):

yes u can

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[\frac{9}{3}x-\frac{6}{3}=2x+3\] well then apply that here

OpenStudy (philcua):

which would be 5x

OpenStudy (freckles):

9 divided by 3 isn't 5?

OpenStudy (philcua):

oh sorry was doing problem to the right so it would be like 3 right

OpenStudy (freckles):

9/3=3 6/3=?

OpenStudy (philcua):

2

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[\frac{9}{3}x-\frac{6}{3}=2x+3 \\ 3x-2=2x+3\]

OpenStudy (freckles):

so I replaed 9/3 with 3 and I replaced 6/3 with 2 because 9/3=3 and 6/3=2

OpenStudy (freckles):

now do you know what to do next?

OpenStudy (philcua):

no not really

OpenStudy (freckles):

you can start a number of ways but the objective is to isolate the x term So we want to gather non-x terms on one side and gather x terms on the opposite side

OpenStudy (freckles):

You can start by adding and subtracting some terms on both sides

OpenStudy (freckles):

you see you have the term 2x on the right side you can put it with its buddy on the left side by subtracting 2x on both sides

OpenStudy (philcua):

so that would lead to i seroiulsy dont know sorry

OpenStudy (freckles):

Just try putting a -2x on both sides of the equation

OpenStudy (freckles):

what is 2x-2x=?

OpenStudy (philcua):

0x

OpenStudy (freckles):

and 0 times anything is 0

OpenStudy (freckles):

2x-2x=0x or just 0

OpenStudy (philcua):

so the answer is 0

OpenStudy (philcua):

that cant be right

OpenStudy (freckles):

that is the whole reason we subtracted 2x on the right hand side now whatever we do to one side we do to the other you need now subtract 2x on the other side -- of course it isn't we are not done

OpenStudy (philcua):

oh ok it getting late so i need to hurry

OpenStudy (freckles):

ok well have you put a -2x on both sides yet?

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[\\ 3x-2=2x+3 \\ 3x-2-2x=2x+3-2x \\ 3x-2x-2 =2x-2x+3\] you already did the 2x-2x on the right now you have to do the 3x-2x on the left

OpenStudy (philcua):

i really suck at math so odnt get it would it be wait which answer would i work out

OpenStudy (philcua):

i 2 or 3

OpenStudy (freckles):

so you don't know how to do 3x-2x? Pretend you have 3 dollars and someone takes one away from you. How many dollars do you have left?

OpenStudy (freckles):

or if you have 3 dollars and someone takes 2 away from you

OpenStudy (philcua):

oh o know that but like thats it or do we do the equation that would leave u with 1 dollar xd

OpenStudy (philcua):

so the answers one

OpenStudy (freckles):

3x-2x =1x you keep on thinking we found x... you will know you have x when we have x=a number

OpenStudy (freckles):

so go to equation above that I have and replace 3x-2x with 1x and 2x-2x with 0 and tell me what equation you have now

OpenStudy (philcua):

which would be 2 right or what i really suck so i dont get this

OpenStudy (philcua):

does x = 5

OpenStudy (freckles):

3x-2x-2=2x-2x+3 1x-2=0+3 x-2=3 and yes by adding 2 on both sides you get x=5

OpenStudy (philcua):

ok cool thanks
