Absolute value is the distance away from zero on a number line. The number inside the absolute value brackets is always going to be positive because, like I said, it's the distance away from zero. The best way to think of it is literally the distance to something. You would never say "I'm -3 miles away from my house." You would say "I'm 3 miles from my house."
