I have a question about binary counters. If the is a k-bit counter, what happens if you increment the counter 2^k times? Will it reset and go back to 0?

Yes, they work in modular arithmetic, like a clock resetting to 1 after passing 12. You can see a nice simulation using this application: http://logic.ly/demo/ Pick 'Ripple Counter' out of the examples and click the buttons as the labels tell. Notice it has 4 bits, so the value is shown using a single hexadecimal digit
