MNOP is similar to QRST with a scale factor of 5:4. MP=85MM. What is the value of QT? A) 60mm B)68mm C)84mm D)106.5mm

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

"congruent ... with a scale factor"? What does that even mean? I think it means "similar". Why are we inventing new terms? MP:QT :: 5:4 :: 85:What

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant similar sorry... @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

And, what solution did you produce?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

none.. because i dont know how to do it... im horrible at geometry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You've never done a Proportion of any kind? This cannot be.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

It's 5:4. The answer must be less than 85. How much less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one..??? @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

5:4 is a 20% decrease. Is 1 20% of 85? No guessing. Think through it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

68... im honestly terrible at this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait it is 68 because the 20% decrease of 85 is 17 and 85-17 is 65.. right? @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

\(\dfrac{5}{4} = \dfrac{85}{QT} \rightarrow QT = 85\cdot\dfrac{4}{5} = 68\) See, you CAN do it! Good work. Take a good look at the "Proportion" solution I jsut presented. Very useful technique.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!!!

You are welcome. Keep trying. You WILL get it!!
