the number system you're used to is base 10, 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 base 2 has 2 numbers, 0 and 1 base 5 has 0 1 2 3 4 5 to switch any base to base 10 you operate per digit the first column is going to be multiplied by 5^0, the second 5^1, and so on, just like in base 10 15 base 10 = 1*10^1 + 1*10^0
