Does anyone know the definition of Prelude?

If you try to break up the word you can figure it out, or Google is a fantastic place to go. the prefix "pre" means before, and I'm guessing lude means story or something? Anyways, I'm pretty sure it means something along the lines of the prologue, or pre-story/play or whatever it is.

A prelude is a short piece of music, the form of which may vary from piece to piece. The prelude may be thought of as a preface.
