Using coal for fuel releases pollution into the atmosphere. Why do people continue to use coal if it causes pollution?

the only reason i can think of is because it is a cheap and easy way to generate power even though it causes pollution

Because it is affordable and coal is plentiful compared to some other things. Also there are some people who just don't care what happens to the atmosphere.
