The product of 9 and a number is 12 less than three times that number. What is the number? Help!! i dont get it DX

OpenStudy (anonymous):

relatively hard to comprehend for me as well

OpenStudy (amorfide):

the product is multiplication of two numbers you know 9 is multiplied by a number to equal 3 times the number subtract 12 let the unknown be the variable x 9x is equal to -12 of 3x so 9x=3x-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x=-18??? @amorfide

OpenStudy (amorfide):

simplify to get x on its own

OpenStudy (amorfide):

no you have 9x=3x-12 subtract 3x from both sides to get 6x=-12 divide by 6 to get x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh x=-2

OpenStudy (amorfide):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
