Explain the significance of Miranda vs Arizona and Gideon Wainwright @Rizags

OpenStudy (rizags):

Miranda v. Arizona established that criminal defendants had a right to know their rights under the constitution prior to questioning by law enforcement. Prior to this, police officers did not have to advise a suspect about his rights. This is the right to remain silent, to have a lawyer present during questioning, and to have a lawyer provided if you cannot afford one.

OpenStudy (rizags):

Gideon v. Wainwright was important because the Supreme Court ruled that states had to grant legal counsel to defendants who couldn't afford their own legal counsel through the sixth amendment. It further perfected the trial system and ended discrimination against the poor in court.
