#1 is personification. "all HIS might" "HE did his very best" points to it being personification, because the author is presenting the sun like a human.

Notice how the author mentioned it was "THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT" The moon doesn't think the sun has any business invading her time, because she rules the night, he rules the day.
