I have a simple question, I just don't know what is going wrong with this!
sin(x)=8/144
Its acting weird when i try and calculate it.

what are you getting?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I'm trying to calculate this out, and it isn't working out right.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Something is just wrong with what i'm doing and I don't know where.
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
can you write what you have so far?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Its coming out as 0.0555... and I know that isn't right.

Absolutely.
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ok so what you did was compute sin(8/144) to get 0.05552698
you are in radian mode btw
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
but you want to find the x value such that sin(x) = 8/144
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so you have to use arcsine
OpenStudy (anonymous):
sin^-1 right...?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
correct
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay now that I'm in degrees... its saying error.
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how did you type it in?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8/144 then equals then sin^-1
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what calculator are you using?

I've tried a scientific and my phone (which would be iphone)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ok I'm going to use wolfram alpha
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I've tried Mathway too
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
I typed in "arcsin(8/144)" without quotes

Huh.
3.185 degrees.
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
that is saying the value of x is roughly 3.185 degrees, yeah
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I wonder why I have been struggling with something so simple.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
But thanks man
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
np
