Let's face it: most kids do not get enough exercise these days. Kids spend most of their days in school and at home doing homework. Yes, some kids play on sports teams and practice before and/or after school each day. Yet, it's now a well-known fact that one in three kids in the United States is overweight or obese. Parents, that statistic isn't going to improve unless you take some action.
One easy way to get your kids moving more is to encourage walking. Walking is an activity that kids of all fitness levels can do. Moreover, as a parent, you can and should walk with your kids. If you can, walk to the store with your kids. If you have to drive, park far away from the entrance. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Also, take family walks. Walk around your neighborhood for 30 minutes after dinner each night, and use the time as a chance to chat and catch up with each other. Encourage kids to play outside in their free time. They can play tag, jump rope, or play kickball with friends. If it is a rainy day, do chores together around the house. There is nothing wrong with spending time reading, watching TV, or playing video games. However, kids need to learn that there are other ways to have fun. Make exercise seem enjoyable and easy, but also teach your kids that exercise is a priority. Let your kids know that they need to step it up if they want to be healthy and live a long life.
