How do you find domains for functions?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

$$ \sqrt{x+5}\over x-1 $$ Is this the problem? Or is it $$ \sqrt{x+5\over x-1} $$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its the first one you wrote.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it would be x can't equal 1 and x has to be greater than or equal to -5.

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Ok. To find the domain, we don't allow two things 1) The denominator can NOT be zero 2) Anything under the square root can NOT be negative Your answer is perfect!

Thank you!
