The area of a rectangular room is given by the trinomial x^2 - 3x - 28. What are the possible dimensions of the rectangle? Use Factoring. A.(x+7) and (x-4) B.(x-7) and (x-4) C.(x+7) and (x+4) D.(x-7) and (x+4)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

find the factors of -28 that add to -3.... the larger factor is negative and the smaller is positive hope it helps

here is what you must do for these problems. First this is much simpler when the x^2 has a 1 multiplied to it which is in your case. first you must write down a list of two numbers that will multiply to give you -28 second after you have written all of the possible combinations you can think of try to see if two of them will add to -3 then you will have your roots... but remember the roots are values which will make your equation equal to 0 so if you get -7 for a root for example you will write (x+7) because pluggin in the -7 will give you the zer0.
