condensation polymerization
so my teacher said that in order to have a condensation polymerization, it must be bi functional, so a functional group at each end of a molecule. for something like polyesters, i see how this statement applies because its a carboxylic acid that has -COOH at two ends and alcohol with OH at two ends, but for something like lipids for example glycerol + a fatty acid ( it seems to only have 1 -COOH group at and end not two...
or is it talking about the product that must have functional groups at each end not reactants?
Condensation polymerisation is the type of polymerisation or reaction between monomers or of single hydrocarbon units in which the typical product is water.
If you take account of the functional group of an ester it is COO. When the reaction takes place, an end of the molecule with COOH reacts with the termination of OH, combining the H from COOH with Oh from alcohol, forming HOH or water, leaving the ester COO.

But try like this: Let R be part of the organic molecule. I will focus mole on the terminations. You know that a fat is an ester or it is made by an alcohol and an organic acid. So, to get the fat is : ROH + RCOOH. Then take the H from ROH and combine with OH from RCOOH. What do you get? HOH or H2O or water, being left with RCOOR, an ester. How is this one ?
oh ok i see, that makes sense, but how does that relate to being bifunctional have two functional groups at each end? oh wait R is a functional group right?

R is part of the molecule. Like CH2 or CH3 or CH2 with branches... Bifunctional it means it has 2 functional groups at the same time. There are fats that have 2 functional groups at the same time, like OH and COOH in the same molecule. For instance you can have a fat that in the middle of the molecule there is a OH as a branch and at the end there is COOH.
