PLEASE HELP A bag contains 20 marbles of the same size that are blue, green, and red. The probability of picking a blue marble is 20%. The probability of picking a green marble is 50%. Determine the probability of picking a red marble from the bag and then classify the probability of picking a red marble as likely or not likely to occur.

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

The total probability of picking any marble is 100% You can only pick blue, green or red marbles. They give you the probability for blue and green so the remaining probability is for red $$ P_{red}=1-.2-.5=? $$

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you so much @ybarrap

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

You're welcome.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ybarrap

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Just complete the arithmetic above to get your answer. Then answer the question on whether this number you get means "likely" to occur or "unlikely" to occur

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is -0.7?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

1-0.2-0.5=0.3

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

So 30% of drawing a Red marble

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so it is unlikly?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Given that there is a 50% chance of drawing a Green and 20% for drawing a blue, how likely is it that when you draw a marble you will get a Red? Green more likely than Red Red more likely than Blue Blue is least likely What do you think? Are you likely to draw a Red marble when the chance of getting some other color is 0.2+0.5=0.7 or 70%?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

If I told you that a team had a 30% chance of winning, do you think that team will win? If I told you that a team had a 70% chance of losing, do you think that team will lose?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is likely?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

There is a 30% chance of drawing a Red. If I told you that your chance of winning is 30%, do you think you will likely win?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

The chance of drawing a color other than Red is 70%. If I told you that you had a 70% chance of losing, are you likely to lose?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it is unlikely because there are not a big chance to draw red

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

That's right! Say this was for $1 million dollars and you had to bet on Red or some other color. You have a 70% chance of winning if you pick something other than Red. On the other hand, you have only 30% chance of winning if you chose Red.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

You're welcome - don't let numbers scare you :)
