Questions of these type: 1.)Prove that the volume of the largest cone that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius R is 8/27 of the volume of the sphere 2.)Show that the right circular cone of least curved surface and given volume has an altitude equal to root 2 times the radius of the base. I know how to do these questions (they are done by second derivative test) but the method is long and tedious. Is there any easier method I could use? I remember my teacher telling me to take the square of Volume/Area function but I don't know if that's allowed....
if you can imagine problems in 3D ... i can help, the tip of the cone will be touching the sphere, then snap out the 2D image for clear understanding then use the property regarding circles of chord subtending the angle with a chord and at the center...if will be able to do that you can get the angle as 120 degrees between the extremes of the chords and the center after that it will be simple trigo and nothing else
