Distant Love Ally noticed how charming and energetic he was in all his posted pictures. She wanted to speak to Austin but the three times they were in the same building they couldn't do anything proactive except smile and say "hello" to one another. They were close, but felt distant at those times. After two more silent run-ins they both found each other on a date, and again they just smiled and said "hello" without the distant feeling. Instead of feeling distant both felt happy and relieved that they each found a love. In "Checkouts", author Cynthia Rylant uses dynamic characters, internal conflict, and climax to communicate the theme of if you do not tell the person you like them as well you'll forget about each other and move on. In this short story the theme is an example of a teen distant love situation, the literary elements that are used to communicate the point of the story are dynamic character, internal conflict, and climax. -" And when finally they did meet up again, neither offered a clue to the other that he, or she, had been the object of obbsesive thought for weeks."- ( page 30 ) In that excerpt from "Checkouts" , it shows internal conflict. They couldn't figure out wether or not to speak to each other even when they had wild feelings for the other. Here the excerpt displays dynamic character. -" For some perverse reason she would not have been able to articulate, the girl did not bring her cart up to the bag boy's checkout when her shopping was done. And the bag boy let her leave the store, pretending not to notice her. "- ( page 30 ) It revealed even though they were interested in one another there were few things done to show their admiration. The dynamic characters in this story change over time due to not conversating with one another. Drifting apart and changing their feelings is what makes them dynamic characters. In this last excerpt climax is used. At the moment I think they will talk, because of the shock in running into their previous crush, they say nothing. -" Some months later the bag boy and the girl with the orange bow again crossed paths, standing in line with their dates at a movie theater, and, glancing toward the other, each smiled slightly, then looked away, as strangers on public buses often do, when one is moving off the bus and the other is moving on. "- ( page 31 ) The climax grabed my attention making me wonder what would each say or do. Then as soon as they do nothing I could still feel the suspension of the climax. In "Checkouts", author Cynthia Rylant uses dynamic character, internal conflict, and climax to communicate the theme of if you do not tell the person you like them, you'll forget about each other and move on. While reading "Checkouts", by author Cynthia Rylant I was kept high on my toes, waiting to see how it turned out, wether it was another romance story when the two characters fall in love instantly or a negative feeling pushes them apart. But this turnout was far more captivating for me. If your heart desires something you should take advantage of it being near you and enjoy your time that is shared.
