OpenStudy (godmod360):

Anschluss was first mentioned in the peace conferences following World War I, The Austrian Empire was falling apart at the seams due to the fact that the mass diversity of its inhabitants and the fact that its outdated institutions were no longer effective enough to control its people. Thus they pleaded with the Triple Entente to allow them to unify with the Germany whom was also in political upheaval so that they may help one another but this idea was rejected on the grounds that it would make Germany more powerful than it was before the war, Thus the Austrian people began to starve and die in massive quantities this goes for the German people as well. thus once Hitler rose to power and instituted a war time economy which (in the short-term only) helped the economy, German military might began to climb against the command of the triple entente and forced the Austrian people to join, despite Mussolini trying to stop him. But he was welcomed with open arms.
