If too many offspring are born, they will be forced to compete for resources. Genetic variation leaves some offspring better adapted to their environment than others.

If too many offspring are born, they will be forced to compete for resources. Survival of the fittest refers to those who are "fit" or well adapted to survive in an environment given that they possess a skill set which gives them an advantage in competing for resources within their own as well as outside of their species.
