A type of energy provided by the waste of living materials, such as plants, wood, and manure is called: A. Fossil Fuels B. Nonrenewable Resource C. Biomass D. Geothermal Energy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C or A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fossil Fuels, give us electricity, but are renewable, as coal and oil come from biomass (Hence living things)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm. Well, let's narrow things down. Well, coal and oil from from the degradation of biomass that was formed about 260 million years ago. For various reasons, we only see coal and oil in a very narrow time frame. It is no longer being formed so there is only so much. Do you know what "geo" means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really :\, but I assume the answer is D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope. Geothermal means, basically, heat energy from Earth. So things like the hot gases from volcanoes and the such, which is actually what Iceland uses to generate a lot of energy. So, can geothermal be correct? It does not use plants, animals, etc. A nonrenewable resource is something that can be used up. It does not have to be a fuel. There is only so much gold on Earth and once we use it all we will be out. Biomass is just the weight of life. We can talk about the biomass of humans, as in, if you added the weight of all the humans on Earth together you would get X billion pounds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I find this pretty difficult because fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource. This means A and B are equally valid answers. Why? Well, if the answer is A, than it must include B since all fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources. And conversely, if B we must have A correct as well. Not sure what to tell you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fossil Fuels CAN be renewed, it takes millions of years, For another I think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At least that's what i was told

OpenStudy (anonymous):

However, I am not sure how manure could be a fossil fuel as it is used before it could even become a fossil, and I don't know of any fuel from ancient manure. Well, it depends on which fossil fuel. Oil and coal are never going to be renewed. This is because the way it is made requires that the dead plant matter not be degraded. The primary chemical of interest is lignin. What we see in the research as that as soon as fungi are able to break down lignin, coal and oil formation stops. Fungi are still breaking down lignin so lignin will not be around long enough to become coal or oil.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am gonna choose B, I'll tell you if it was wrong or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that is best. I wish that people who write questions would not do this. It is not fair to the students to give them questions that are ambiguous. I'm a Intro Bio teacher, so it is a bit of a personal issue with me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree, some questions I have are 2 of the same factors in math, to be quite honest it's very confusing sometimes
