When we talk about quartiles we're just talking about dividing the data set into 4 parts of equal size (i.e. containing the same number of values), after the data set has been ordered from smallest to largest. If you find the median of your data set, the lower quartile value is the median of the lower half of the data, and the upper quartile is the median of the upper half of the data. The interquartile range is the difference between the upper and lower quartiles.
