MEDAL AND FAN! Is the sequence 2,3,5,8,12 geometric? explain why or why not.

OpenStudy (mattyboyy):

I dont think it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it has no form of geomitry in its sequence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is what I did ---->|dw:1426631508735:dw|

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

i does not appear to have some pattern of geometric sequence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@eliassaab @GretaKnows

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also, is the sequence arithmetic? explain why or why not

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

to know a common ratio of a geo sequence take the next term divide it by the previous one to if you did that here i does not work for all terms of this sequence

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well that exactly what I did in the drawing above

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

to know if it is arithmetic take the next minus the previous if there a common number then it is if not it is not

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

well i didn't work so stop and say it is not a geometric seq

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

the reason is there is no common ratio btw the terms

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

similarly, you will say there is no common difference btw the term for it to be an arithmetic sequence

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

consult this link for more info about the subject http://www.purplemath.com/modules/series3.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait nvm I got it now! here is why|dw:1426632232412:dw| since all of the differences are different, it is not geometric

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank You for helping though :D

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

that work is unnecessary my dear just say there is no common ratio that's all

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

there is nothing to your problem beside that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I know just that's my work to get there

OpenStudy (xapproachesinfinity):

it didn't need any work, but if that make you happy go for it :) in math when something is trivial we just stay it is
