European countries (and some Asian ones) drained the African continent of its natural resources via routes like the Sahara, Red Sea, and along the coasts next to the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Natural resources included slaves. Ultimately, the Slave Trade led to a weakened continent and internal conflicts that allowed for easy European colonization and the impoverished state many of the countries are in today.
