the only way to remove a square is to take a root of  $$x ^{2}$$
this looks like
$$\sqrt{x^{2}}$$
but, if you do it to one side then you need to do it to the other side
so, 
$$\sqrt{196}$$
is = to 
14
so x = 14

Square root both sides to eliminate the square on x, you get 2 answers + or - when you square root.
