OpenStudy (bananas1234):

Solve the equation. If necessary, round your answer to the nearest tenth. x^2 = 196 14 –14, 14 98 –98, 98

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure what the equation is. is it just \[x^{2} = 196\]

OpenStudy (bananas1234):

then what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the only way to remove a square is to take a root of \[x ^{2}\] this looks like \[\sqrt{x^{2}}\] but, if you do it to one side then you need to do it to the other side so, \[\sqrt{196}\] is = to 14 so x = 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Square root both sides to eliminate the square on x, you get 2 answers + or - when you square root.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct, so one addition is that a if you square a negative you also get the same answer. \[\pm 14\]
