maybe this will help on the vikings The Viking marauders of the 9th century paved the way for the high middle ages. So great was the danger they posed that the peasants had to make great concessions to local lords for protection. Only the local lord had a walled fort or "protocastle," capable of resisting attack. In exchange for being allowed to shelter within the walls of a lord, the pesant had to give him a share of the crops and become a serf i.e. a slave in all but name. As the power of local barons grew, that of the central governments waned. Already split by the treaty of Verdun, the Carolingian Empire was further fragmented. It wasn't possible for central monarchs to maintain control amidst all the chaos caused by the Vikings, so the local barons filled the void. The main result of Viking attacks was extreme political decentralization or subdivision in western Europe. But the Vikings had a more longterm, positive impact. Not only did they completely assimilate into European countries where they settled, they imparted their seafaring skills to western Europe, paving the way for increased trade and the age of exploration. Northmen such as Erickson actually started this c 1000 CE by discovering Greenland etc.
