Basically a placebo is a dummy pill/medicine. The person taking it doesn't know that it doesn't contain any active materials in it, but he thinks it does, and this simple belief in the effect of the medicine can cure a percentage of the problem.

Pretty much the same as when you were a kid and you fell down. Your mother would kiss it all better. She didn't do anything but it meant the world to you.
