Which of the following best describes the equation below? y = -7x + 3 neither a relation nor a function both a relation and a function relation only function only

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

ummm I'm not sure... sorry :/

I not sure either

OpenStudy (igreen):

A relation is a set of points..a function is when there is a unique x-value for each value of y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thx

OpenStudy (igreen):

@horsegirl325 What's your question?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Some more info: http://www.regentsprep.org/regents/math/algtrig/atp5/lfunction.htm As you can see, functions are relations but not all relations are functions.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

After reading carefully e.mccormick's link, you can appreciate the following useful and easy to remember facts: 1. Some relations are functions, some are not. 2. All functions are relations. 3. All polynomials of one variable are functions (very handy to know). 4. Polynomials of one variable include constant functions such as y=5, linear functions such as y=2x-1, quadratic functions such as y=x^2+2x-1,.... and polynomials of higher degrees.
